If you know me at all, whether in real life or through my blogging tales, you are sure to know of my intense passion and dear love for summer camps. More specifically a particular camp known as Beulah Beach nestled along the shore of Ohio’s Lake Erie. And perhaps it may seem at times I am over-talking about said camp, but if that is what you’re thinking then you must not have had the pleasure of experiencing a summer such as the many I’ve been blessed with at Beulah. There are so many life lessons, friendships, and skills of which I have learned from my years working at camp. I believe that a summer spent with like-minded, college student, serving others, and worshiping God is an experience that every young adult can benefit from. I would love to share my own personal journey in order to show you the value that a summer of serving can have on a young person’s life.
I have been going to summer camp my entire life, but at age 14 was the first time I was able to work as a volunteer at Beulah Beach. At this point I was not even in high school, yet but was a mere impressionable teen entering her first steps into adulthood. Those early years of volunteering a week at a time were my first glances into an authentic and Christian community. A was able to glean wisdom about all of life’s issues that those a few years ahead of me had already gone through. Then the year I graduated high school I served my first complete summer on staff along with 40 or so other young adults. Over the next three years serving in different parts of staff I learned much about team work, friendship, hard work, discipleship, generosity, leadership, humility, and countless other lessons. And, in addition I gained countless incredible and deep friendships with people from all over the country. These relationships go beyond just a summer together, but have carried on for years and years through fierce loyalty, Godly community, and millions of shared laughs along the way.
Summer camp is a place to serve hard and be blessed 100 times over in the process. One summer can give you so much valuable experience, many lessons, deep and lasting friendships, as well as draw your heart to complete dependence on God. Camp is the most stretching and exhausting time of my life, but even it comprises some of the most valuable lessons and friendships in my life. As a young adult, this is your time to embrace the adventure of a lifetime by diving head first into 3 months of wild, summer fun. I challenge every college student to seize the day and apply at a Christian summer camp, and I can guarantee you will not regret it. I urge Nyack students to prayerfully consider finding some place to serve this summer especially with so many camps around the area who also take the time to recruit at our school. Keep your eyes open for camp visit days, and most of all apply. You will embark on the best and most rewarding summer of your entire life. I promise!
