The Nyack Nursing Difference

With so many Nursing schools to choose from, it can be hard to find the right one. It can also be very difficult to get into Nursing school, and once you have started taking classes, it is hard to transfer credits to a new school. With that said, choosing a nursing school can be a tough task and a big decision.

Here at Nyack, the nursing program is unique and definitely worth looking in to. It is a great nursing program that is different from any other nursing program out there. Here are some ways in which the nursing program here is different and worthwhile:

  1. Professors care about the students—The professors want their students to succeed. They take time to get to know each individual and help each person learn in a way that will benefit them. They are always available during office hours and will make extra time in their busy schedules to meet with students and give them the tools to succeed.

  2. The faculty listen to student feedback—The faculty run this programs for the students. They are constantly looking for ways to improve the program, and help students succeed. Each faculty member runs a committee to try and help improve the nursing program. These committees include the Curriculum Committee, the Critical Thinking Committee, the Evaluation Committee, and the Academic Integrity Committee. Each committee consists of a faculty member and a few students from each class. The students are given the opportunity to speak on behalf of their classmates and discuss changes in the Nursing Department.

  3. Cross-cultural nursing experience—At Nyack you have the unique opportunity to practice your nursing skills overseas and broaden your spectrum of skills. Each summer the Nursing Department takes a three week trip to India. There have also been opportunities for students to take trips to Haiti and South Africa. Not only do these trips help students to grow in their nursing abilities, they also allow for personal growth and a chance to establish relationships worldwide.

In India, the students were given the opportunity to experience culture as well as become more talented nurses.

  4. The program revolves around God—Although you might not recognize it at first, your personal beliefs will always play a role in your career. At Nyack College, we are taught what it means to incorporate our beliefs into Nursing practice. We are taught what it looks like to be a Christian nurse and how God influences our lives as nurses each day. It is through His strength that we learn and grow, not our own.

  5. The faculty are concerned about more than just the NCLEX—When entering a nursing program, everyone is always concerned about passing the NCLEX when they graduate. Although this is very important and the program gives you every tool necessary to do so, the faculty at Nyack College realize that there is more to nursing than just passing a standardized test. They teach you how to handle tough ethical decisions, what it means to be a lifelong learner, what it means to show compassion, and how to provide outstanding nursing care.

The professors care not only about making us better nurses, but also about helping us to learn and grow in all areas of life.

Nyack is truly a different school than any other school I have experienced. The Nursing program is focused on helping students succeed and not just become adequate nurses, but rather excellent nurses.
