A. B. Simpson, founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, focused on four important points when he started the CMA. In his Fourfold Gospel the focus is on Jesus Christ as Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and the Coming King. I had heard about all of these in one way or another while growing up, but Healing was not something that I had experienced much growing up. Coming to Nyack College, I have not only learned so much more about healing, but also I have been able to see and experience it with those around me. There have been many deeper life series which would set aside a night of healing and restoration and even several classes that deal with holistic healing. Nyack College realizes that we serve a good God, but also live in a broken world. Sickness, pain, fear, and hurts can leave students hurting, and Nyack does not ignore them, but wants to see its students become whole and stable servants of the Lord. I have been both blessed and challenged by the process of healing that Nyack leads its students through. It is great to be at a school where at times it is ok not to always be ok.
It was great experiencing different forms of healing this year, but then I came home and was encouraged again by a sermon I heard last Sunday. Dr. John Stumbo has spoke at Nyack before and is the current president of the U.S. CMA. Stumbo has an amazing story of healing himself, and spoke in my church about different lessons learned on the path of healing. He was an encouragement to everyone who is going through a hardship in life no matter what the struggle is. He shared six lessons that he learned that I believe can serve as great encouragement and support to those of you who may be struggling through some sort of heartache or ailment currently.
Lesson #1: Illness often opens us to new possibilities.
Lesson #2: The path of healing often has a detour.
Lesson #3: The path of healing may not fit your expectations.
Lesson #4: The path of healing is often preserved by a voice of reason.
Lesson #5: The path of healing often leads to a place of humbling.
Lesson #6: Healing is often more than physical. It can lead to a new relationship with God.
I hope these serve as an encouragement to you wherever you may be on the path of healing and that you can continue to trust that God is going to use this experience to teach and bless you.
